Speptic System Upgrades

Septic systems potentially pollute both surface and ground waters with bacteria, nitrogen, and oxygen demanding materials. Septic system upgrades, utilizing nitrogen removal treatment units, can make a difference in reducing these pollutants. These upgrades are available to homeowners FOR FREE with systems within the Critical Areas (1000 feet of the water), and may be available for free for other homeowners as well. Funding exists for 600 upgrades a year. Out of 420,000 septic systems throughout the state, only a few hundred homeowners have used the program.

CREB CONSERVANCY supports septic system upgrades, and is seeking volunteers to build a program to alert homeowners to the importance of this free program and to encourage and assist them in upgrading their septic systems.
